Nepal Champions Urban Sustainability Through Climate-Responsive Building Designs: EU SWITCH – Asia

Friday February 20, 2026

The BUILDING Energy Efficiency in Nepal (BEEN) Project has been featured by the EU SWITCH-Asia programme for its significant contribution to promoting climate-responsive and energy-efficient building practices in Nepal.

As Nepal’s urban population continues to grow rapidly, energy demand in buildings is increasing, making sustainable construction practices more important than ever. Through its four-pillar approach — Capacity Building, Market System Development, Financial Instruments, and Policy Support — BEEN is driving a transition toward a low-carbon and resource-efficient building sector.

Key achievements highlighted in the feature include:

  • 162 professionals from 137 MSMEs empowered
  • 72 housing units transformed through energy-efficient design interventions
  • Estimated 165 tons of CO₂ emissions reduction through the use of 2.5 million hollow bricks
  • Signing of 42 MoUs with municipalities to integrate energy efficiency into by-laws
  • Collaboration with Nabil Bank to introduce a Sustainable Housing Loan scheme

With projected energy savings of 28–36% in showcase buildings and growing municipal commitments, BEEN continues to strengthen Nepal’s pathway toward climate-resilient and sustainable urban development.
